Most Dangerous Intersections by City

Quick answer: pick a city to see the junctions and road spots with the most police-reported crashes in its official open data, on a map and in a table. The counts show where crashes cluster; they are not a risk rate, because traffic volumes are not published with the crash records.

Questions

Dangerous intersections — FAQ

How do you find the most dangerous intersections?
We use each city's own open crash data: every police-reported crash has a point, and we count crashes in squares of about 135 m. The list shows where the most crashes were reported, which is the usual first step road engineers take before they check traffic volumes.
Is the intersection with the most crashes the most dangerous?
Not necessarily. A junction carrying 60,000 cars a day can have more crashes than a quiet one and still be safer for each driver. Traffic volumes are not in the data, so these pages rank crash counts, not risk.
Where does the data come from?
From official city and state open-data portals (for example the Chicago Data Portal, NYC Open Data and the Denver crash dataset). Each city page names its source and the dates it covers.
