The court decides the fine and can move it for aggravating factors (poor weather, near a school, towing, previous convictions) or mitigating ones, and should consider a ban longer than 56 days for speeds grossly over the limit. Weekly income means take-home pay after tax and NI; it is treated as £120 when it is £120 or less or only benefits, and the court assumes £440 when it is not known. Victim surcharge: 40% of the fine, maximum £2,000. Prosecution costs are extra and are not included.

Questions

Speeding fines — FAQ

How much is a speeding fine in the UK?
The minimum is a £100 fixed penalty and 3 points. If the case goes to court in England or Wales, the fine is a percentage of your weekly income after tax: Band A starts at 50%, Band B at 100% and Band C at 150%, up to £1,000 (£2,500 on a motorway).
How many points do you get for speeding?
A fixed penalty is 3 points. In court in England and Wales: Band A 3 points; Band B 4–6 points or a 7–28 day ban; Band C 6 points or a 7–56 day ban. 12 points within 3 years can mean a 6-month ban, and new drivers lose their licence at 6 points within 2 years of passing.
How fast is Band C speeding?
Band C starts at 41 mph in a 20 zone, 51 in a 30, 66 in a 40, 76 in a 50, 91 in a 60 and 101 mph in a 70 limit.
Is the speeding fine different in Scotland and Northern Ireland?
Scotland: the conditional offer is also £100 and 3 points, paid to the Scottish Courts and Tribunals Service, and speed awareness courses are not available. Northern Ireland: £60 and 3 points plus a £5 offender levy for drivers aged 18 or over, and a course costs £87. The England and Wales court bands do not apply in either.
How much is a speeding fine in Ireland?
€160 and 3 penalty points if paid within 28 days, €240 in the next 28 days, or 5 points if convicted in court. 12 points in 3 years means an automatic 6-month ban (7 for learner and novice drivers).
Does pleading guilty reduce a speeding fine?
Yes, in England and Wales: up to one-third off the fine for a guilty plea at the first stage, up to a quarter later, and up to a tenth on the first day of trial. A guilty plea does not shorten a driving ban.
