ON DECEMBER 7TH, 2018 I WAS DRIVING ABOUT 65 MPH WHEN I HEARD AN EXPLOSION LOAD ENOUGH TO MAKE MY EARS RING. I LOOKED UP AND DISCOVERED THAT THE SUNROOF HAD EXPLODED AND FINE PARTICLES OF GLASS WERE RAINING DOWN ON ME THROUGH THE SUNROOF SUNSHADE. NOTHING HIT THE SUNROOF TO CAUSE THIS AS THERE WAS NO OTHER TRAFFIC, OVERPASSES OR CONSTRUCTION ON THE ROAD AT THE TIME. THE…

Steering ODI 11056243 12/23/2017

THE CLOCK SPRING IN THE STEERING COLUMN DETERIORATED AND BECAME NONFUNCTIONAL IN A CAR THAT IS ONLY 3 YEARS OLD AND WITH ONLY 17000 MILES ON IT. THIS IS NOT AN OLD CAR, TO SPEND ABOUT $800 TO REPAIR A PART THAT IS STILL THIS NEW IS RIDICULOUS. THERE ARE PAST AND CURRENT INVESTIGATIONS INTO THIS EXACT PART WITH MANY MODELS, INCLUDING VARIATIONS OF OUR OWN.

Engine ODI 11497105 12/12/2022

Timing chain “extended” during driving resulting in the car to start to shudder and shake violently during movement. Had to force the vehicle off the side of the road. Car is 66k miles, timing chain is rated at 120k+. Engine block is now totaled. Dealership will not pursue any actions and has charged 7K to fix. Car is only worth 8/9k. VW was contacted and they said there was…

Questions

FAQ

Is the 2014 Volkswagen Tiguan reliable?
Owners have filed 84 safety complaints with NHTSA for the 2014 Volkswagen Tiguan, most often about air bags. Compare the complaint counts across model years above — a year with far more complaints than the model's average is the strongest 'avoid' signal in public data.
Which Volkswagen Tiguan years should I avoid?
The rule of thumb used by analysts: a model year whose complaint count is well above the model's own average (we flag 2× or more) usually had a real manufacturing or design problem — not just noisy reporting. Use the year-by-year strip on this page.
Where do these complaints come from?
Directly from NHTSA, the US government road-safety agency. Any owner can file a Vehicle Owner Questionnaire; NHTSA publishes them as public domain data. We cache each lookup for up to 7 days.
Do complaints mean a recall is coming?
Sometimes. NHTSA opens defect investigations when complaint patterns emerge, and investigations can end in recalls. Check the recalls page for this vehicle to see what has already been recalled.
