What happened on the Bommasandra flyover

The first crash was reported within the Electronic City Traffic Police limits at around 1 am, when a speeding vehicle hit a motorcycle on the Bommasandra flyover. Two riders were killed on the spot.

The two who died were Lingaraju, 28, and Devarajamma, 25, both natives of Sira taluk in Tumakuru district. Lingaraju worked as a cab driver and lived in Hoskote, while Devarajamma worked at a private company and lived in paying guest accommodation in Electronic City. Police said the two knew each other, as they came from neighbouring villages in Sira, and were returning together on the motorcycle when an unidentified vehicle hit them on the flyover.

Both riders were thrown to either side of the road and suffered severe injuries. The driver did not stop after the crash. Police staff who reached the scene moved the bodies to a nearby hospital.

The Electronic City Traffic Police have registered a case and are examining CCTV footage from surrounding roads to identify the vehicle.

What happened in HSR Layout

The second crash happened at around 12.30 am within the HSR Layout Traffic Police limits. A 42-year-old rider, Dayananda, was killed after his motorcycle collided head-on with a canter truck.

Dayananda was a native of Tiptur who had come to Bengaluru for work. Police said he had finished work and was returning on his motorcycle via the flyover on 14th Main Road in HSR Layout. He was riding on the wrong side of the road, apparently believing it was a one-way road, when a canter truck coming from the opposite direction hit him.

He suffered grievous injuries and died on the way to hospital. The HSR Layout Traffic Police have registered a case and are investigating.

What police are doing now

Police have registered cases in both incidents. In the Bommasandra case, officers are working through CCTV footage from roads around the flyover to identify the vehicle that struck the two riders and left the scene. In the HSR Layout case, police are investigating the head-on collision with the canter truck.

The human toll in context

Three deaths in a single night in one city underline how quickly separate, unrelated crashes can add up. India as a whole records an estimated 222,862 road deaths a year, a WHO rate of 15.6 deaths per 100,000 people — about 611 deaths every day. Most of those deaths happen in crashes that, taken one by one, attract little attention beyond the families and neighbourhoods affected.

What happens next

Police normally publish a confirmed casualty count within 24 to 48 hours once the injured are counted and the dead identified. In this case the three deaths are confirmed, and the open question is whether CCTV evidence will identify the driver who left the Bommasandra flyover without stopping.
