Since 2017 the M90 Queensferry Crossing carries general traffic over the Firth of Forth. The older Forth Road Bridge next to it is now a public transport corridor for buses, taxis, cyclists and pedestrians, and is used as a diversion when the Queensferry Crossing is shut. The Queensferry Crossing has 3.3 m wind shielding, so it stays open in winds that used to close the old bridge.

This is general information, not legal advice. Operators can change their rules and close a road for other reasons (crashes, ice, works, police instruction) at any time; signs on the road always win.

Usual diversion

High-sided vehicles that cannot cross face a 34-mile diversion via the Kincardine Bridge (Forth Bridges, 2022). When the Queensferry Crossing itself is closed, general traffic has been diverted over the Forth Road Bridge; follow the signs. (source)

Forth Road Bridge and Queensferry Crossing — FAQ

Is the Forth Road Bridge Closed?
Status at 22:24 UK time, Mon 2 Nov 2026: no closure or restriction reported for the Forth crossings in Traffic Scotland incidents (updated 22:16). That is not a guarantee it is open: confirm with the Forth Bridges before you travel. The Forth Bridges posts its own restrictions, which may not be in these feeds. Wind forecast: gusts up to 16 mph in the next 48 hours (Tue 18:00), below the 50 mph level where the Forth Road Bridge closes to high-sided vehicles.
Is the Forth Road Bridge closed due to high winds?
The Forth Road Bridge is normally closed to high-sided and wind-susceptible vehicles when gusts go over 50 mph. Since 2017 it carries only buses, taxis, cyclists and pedestrians anyway; cars and lorries use the Queensferry Crossing.
Is the Queensferry Crossing closed today?
See the live block at the top of this page (Traffic Scotland incidents near the crossing, with the time of the check) and the 48-hour wind strip. The crossing stays open to high-sided vehicles in winds up to 70 mph.
Can cars use the Forth Road Bridge?
No, not normally. Since the Queensferry Crossing opened, the Forth Road Bridge is a public transport corridor for buses, taxis, cyclists and pedestrians. It is opened to other traffic as a diversion when the Queensferry Crossing is closed.
What is the diversion if the Forth bridges are closed to lorries?
The Kincardine Bridge, a diversion of about 34 miles (Forth Bridges).

Sources and method. Planned closures: National Highways Road and Lane Closures API (England, refreshed hourly). Live incidents: National Highways, Traffic Wales and Traffic Scotland feeds (every 15 minutes), matched by road number and a small box around each structure. Weather: Open-Meteo forecast API, CC BY 4.0, refreshed hourly. Risk levels apply each operator's published rule to the forecast gust (or our own bands where no rule is published, marked as ours); they are a guide, not an operator decision. A wind closure is often decided within the hour and can reach the feeds late, so always check the operator. Rules checked 2 November 2026.
