"Reported now" = a planned closure in force or a live incident near the structure in National Highways, Traffic Wales or Traffic Scotland data. The forecast column applies each operator's published rule (or, where none is published, our own bands) to Open-Meteo gusts, snow, temperature and visibility. It is a guide to the risk, not an operator decision.

How closures work

Who decides, and what triggers it

Orwell Bridge

Wind speeds of 60 mph or more predicted: Bridge closed to all traffic.

Operator: National Highways

Severn Bridges

35 knots (40 mph): Leeward lanes closed with red X signs.

Operator: National Highways

Dartford Crossing

Crosswind 55 mph or headwind 65 mph: Lane closures (lanes 2 and 4 if the wind is from the east, lanes 1 and 3 if from the west).

Operator: National Highways

Humber Bridge

Wind restrictions in force: High-sided and vulnerable vehicles (for example HGVs, double-deck buses, motorhomes, vans with modifications, vehicles towing caravans or trailers, vehicles with roof boxes) should not cross; the HumberTag lane closes so these vehicles can be stopped and sent to the bridge car park to wait.

Operator: Humber Bridge Board

Forth Road Bridge and Queensferry Crossing

Gusts over 50 mph: Forth Road Bridge routinely closed to high-sided and wind-susceptible vehicles.

Operator: Forth Bridges (Transport Scotland, operated by BEAR Scotland)

Tay Road Bridge

Gusts of 45 mph: Bridge closed to double-deck buses.

Operator: Tay Road Bridge Joint Board

Snake Pass (A57)

Snow and ice (no fixed trigger): Priority, primary gritting route, but often one of the first roads in the county to close in snow and ice. Derbyshire County Council closes it when it is unsafe; there is no published snow-depth trigger.

Operator: Derbyshire County Council

Woodhead Pass (A628)

Heavy snow, drifting or high winds (no fixed trigger): National Highways closes the pass in both directions between the A616 (Flouch) and the A57 (Hollingworth/Tintwistle). There is no published snow-depth or wind trigger.

Operator: National Highways

A66 Trans-Pennine (Stainmore)

Storm-force gusts (no fixed trigger): Full closure for safety. Example: 7 December 2024 (Storm Darragh), closed both ways between Augill Beck and Scotch Corner with gusts of up to 70 mph predicted.

Operator: National Highways

Questions

Bridge and pass closures — FAQ

Which UK bridges close in high winds?
The bridges most often restricted are the Orwell Bridge (A14), the M48 Severn Bridge, the QEII Bridge at Dartford, the Humber Bridge, the Forth Road Bridge and the Tay Road Bridge. Each operator publishes its own rule: for example National Highways closes the Orwell Bridge when 60 mph or more is predicted and the M48 Severn Bridge when gusts above 46 mph (40 knots) are expected.
Are both Severn bridges closed?
Rarely. The M48 Severn Bridge closes first and traffic is sent over the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge, which has wind barriers. Both close only when winds exceed 70 knots (80 mph).
Is the Snake Pass open today?
Derbyshire County Council closes the A57 Snake Pass in snow and ice, and its decisions are not in the national feeds this site reads. Open the Snake Pass page here for the 48-hour snow and ice forecast and the council link.
Is the Orwell Bridge closed tonight?
Open the Orwell Bridge page: it lists National Highways' planned overnight closures on the A14 at the bridge with times, and the wind forecast against the 50 and 60 mph rules.
How do I know if a bridge is closed to high-sided vehicles?
Check the operator: National Highways for the Orwell, Severn and Dartford crossings, the Humber Bridge Board, the Forth Bridges and the Tay Road Bridge Joint Board. This page shows what the official feeds reported at a stated time and when the wind forecast reaches each published level.

Sources and method. Planned closures: National Highways Road and Lane Closures API (England, refreshed hourly). Live incidents: National Highways, Traffic Wales and Traffic Scotland feeds (every 15 minutes), matched by road number and a small box around each structure. Weather: Open-Meteo forecast API, CC BY 4.0, refreshed hourly. Risk levels apply each operator's published rule to the forecast gust (or our own bands where no rule is published, marked as ours); they are a guide, not an operator decision. A wind closure is often decided within the hour and can reach the feeds late, so always check the operator. Rules checked 2 November 2026.
