I WAS DRIVING 60MPH WITH CRUISE ON A STATE HIGHWAY. WHEN THE CAR ACCELERATED THERE WAS A NOISE I COULDN'T IDENTIFY. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD TO INVESTIGATE AND THE NOISE SOUNDED LIKE ROCKS GRINDING. I CHECKED OIL AND IT WAS FULL. WHEN CAR WAS RESTARTED THE NOISE RESUMED. I TURNED OFF THE CAR AND IT DIDN'T START AGAIN. TOWED TO A GARAGE AND THEY SAID THERE W…

MY SONATA HAS STARTED STALLING AND SHUTTING DOWN WITHOUT WARNING. THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPED WAS DEC 12TH. I JUST FINISHED ACCELERATING FROM ABOUT 35MPH TO 60MPH. THERE THE VEHICLE MADE A LOUD THUMP AND THE ENGINE SHUT DOWN. SECONDS LATER I LOST POWER STEERING, DASH LIGHTS, AND HEADLIGHTS. THE CAR RESTARTED WITHOUT ISSUE. THE SAME PROBLEM HAPPENED ON DEC. 16TH WHILE TRAVEL…

The car has been having problems with oil consumption. The dealer told me, "Your car is OK." On 7/3/2023, the engine light came on. A second round of oil consumption tests began along with a 90,000-mile ser…

Questions

FAQ

Is the 2015 Hyundai Sonata reliable?
Owners have filed 1,153 safety complaints with NHTSA for the 2015 Hyundai Sonata, most often about engine. Compare the complaint counts across model years above — a year with far more complaints than the model's average is the strongest 'avoid' signal in public data.
Which Hyundai Sonata years should I avoid?
The rule of thumb used by analysts: a model year whose complaint count is well above the model's own average (we flag 2× or more) usually had a real manufacturing or design problem — not just noisy reporting. Use the year-by-year strip on this page.
Where do these complaints come from?
Directly from NHTSA, the US government road-safety agency. Any owner can file a Vehicle Owner Questionnaire; NHTSA publishes them as public domain data. We cache each lookup for up to 7 days.
Do complaints mean a recall is coming?
Sometimes. NHTSA opens defect investigations when complaint patterns emerge, and investigations can end in recalls. Check the recalls page for this vehicle to see what has already been recalled.
