"This year so far" runs from 1 January to each city's newest record; last year's column covers the same dates. *Change compares the two years up to 30 days before the newest record, because police add late reports for weeks. Crashes per day = recorded crashes in the 365 days to the newest record ÷ 365. Killed figures are the portal's own counts and can differ from final official death tolls. Questions

Crashes per day — FAQ

How many car accidents happen a day?
Of the cities we track from official open data, Chicago records the most: about 303 police-recorded crashes a day over the last year. Across the United States, about 112 people died in traffic crashes each day in 2020–2024 (NHTSA FARS). Each city below shows its crashes per day, its total so far this year and the same dates last year, straight from the police data its government publishes.
Why are some cities' numbers months old?
Each city publishes on its own schedule. Some portals add crashes within a day or two; Virginia's statewide file arrives in quarterly batches, and a portal can pause its updates for weeks or months. Every row shows the date of its newest record, and "this year so far" always runs to that date, so last year's figure covers exactly the same dates.
Why is the change measured to an earlier date?
Police keep adding late reports for weeks after a crash. Comparing the newest weeks with a complete year earlier would show a false drop, so the year-on-year change is measured to 30 days before each city's newest record.
Are these all crashes, or only serious ones?
They are the crashes each police department publishes. Most portals list every reported crash; Toronto lists injury and fatal collisions only, and some portals do not publish how many people were killed (shown as —). Compare a city with its own past, not with another city.
