Are chains required on I-80 today?
No chain controls are in effect in California right now (all 998 Caltrans checkpoints report R-0). That includes I-80 over Donner Pass and US-50 over Echo Summit.
What do R-1, R-2 and R-3 mean?
Caltrans's definitions: R-1, chains are required on all vehicles except passenger vehicles and light trucks under 6,000 lb with snow tyres on at least two drive wheels (they must still carry chains), and vehicles towing trailers need chains on one drive axle. R-2, chains or traction devices are required on all vehicles except four-wheel or all-wheel drive vehicles with snow-tread tyres on all four wheels (which must carry traction devices). R-3, chains or traction devices on all vehicles, no exceptions; a highway is often closed before R-3. R-0 means no chain control. Always follow the signs and Caltrans or CHP staff at the checkpoint.
