Scroll the table sideways on a phone. "Fog possible" means humidity near 100% with light wind, when fog can form even if the model's visibility stays higher. Low visibility with dry air is labelled haze or smog.

Driving in fog

If you must drive on the motorway in fog

  • Check the NHMP advisory or call 130 before you leave. If a section is closed, do not try to get round it on side roads in the dark.
  • Avoid travel between late night and mid-morning in December and January, when fog is thickest.
  • Slow down so you can stop within the distance you can see. Keep a much longer gap than usual: tail lights ahead give a false sense of safety.
  • Use dipped headlights and fog lights in thick fog; do not use full beam, which reflects back off the fog. Switch fog lights off when visibility improves.
  • Do not stop on the carriageway or hard shoulder unless you must. If you break down, switch on hazard lights, get everyone out behind the barrier and call 130.
  • Keep the windscreen clear with wipers and demister, and open a window slightly at junctions to hear traffic.

Based on general fog-driving guidance (for example the UK Highway Code rules 226 and 234-236) and NHMP's public fog advice. More: will there be fog? (any town).

Method

How the fog risk is worked out

Every hour we read the hourly visibility forecast for 2 to 4 points along each section and classify each hour:

  • Dense fog: visibility under 200 m. The India Meteorological Department calls 50-200 m "dense" and under 50 m "very dense" fog; the same bands are used in fog reporting across the Indo-Gangetic plain.
  • Fog: visibility under 1 km, the World Meteorological Organization definition of fog (WMO International Cloud Atlas), or the model's own fog weather code (WMO code 45 or 48).
  • Mist or haze: visibility 1-2 km (WMO: mist is 1 km or more), or air near saturation with light wind (fog possible).
  • Clear: 2 km or more.

Smog uses the hourly PM2.5 forecast (CAMS model via Open-Meteo), labelled with the US EPA PM2.5 AQI categories as revised in 2024 (good up to 9.0 µg/m³, moderate to 35.4, unhealthy for sensitive groups to 55.4, unhealthy to 125.4, very unhealthy to 225.4, hazardous above). The official AQI uses 24-hour averages, so an hourly peak reads higher.

Limits. This is a model forecast on a grid of roughly 10-25 km, not a sensor on the road. Models can miss shallow radiation fog that forms in a few hours over fields and canals, and their visibility does not fully include smog, so real visibility in the Punjab smog season can be much lower than shown. Sample points are approximate positions on or beside each road (interchanges and towns), set by hand from public maps; they are not survey data. Road numbers follow the current scheme: M-3 is Lahore–Abdul Hakeem, and Pindi Bhattian–Faisalabad–Multan is the M-4. We never report a road as open or closed: only NHMP does that.

Questions

Motorway fog — FAQ

Is the M-2 motorway open today?
This page cannot tell you: it shows the weather model's fog risk, not closures. The National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) decide closures and post them on nhmp.gov.pk/travel-advisory and on their X and Facebook accounts (@NHMPofficial). You can also call the NHMP helpline 130 before you set off.
Why are motorways closed in fog?
When visibility falls to a few hundred metres or less, drivers cannot stop within the distance they can see, and multi-vehicle pile-ups become likely. NHMP closes sections, usually at night and early morning, and reopens them when visibility improves.
When is fog season in Pakistan?
Dense fog on the Punjab plains usually forms from mid-December to February, mostly between late evening and mid-morning. In October and November smog (smoke and dust trapped near the ground) is the bigger problem around Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujranwala and Multan.
What is the motorway police helpline number?
Dial 130 for the National Highways and Motorway Police helpline, from any phone in Pakistan. For an ambulance or rescue, Rescue 1122 operates in most of Pakistan.
What is the difference between fog and smog?
Fog is water droplets: by the World Meteorological Organization definition, visibility below 1 km. Smog is mostly fine particles (PM2.5) from smoke, traffic and industry, trapped under cold air. Both cut visibility; smog also harms health. On this page fog comes from the visibility forecast and smog from the PM2.5 forecast.
How accurate is this fog forecast?
It is a computer weather model, updated every hour. Models are good at large fog events over the plains but can miss shallow, patchy fog that forms in a few hours, and they underestimate visibility loss from smog. Use it to plan, then check NHMP before you drive.
