How to Get a Police Accident Report

Quick answer: ask the agency whose officer came to the crash. State police and highway patrol reports are sold through each state's official page, usually for $5 to $25, and are often ready a few days to six weeks after the crash; city police and sheriff reports come from their own records office. Pick your state for the official request page.

Questions

Accident reports — FAQ

How do I get a police report for a car accident?
Ask the agency whose officer came to the crash. Crashes on highways are usually handled by the state police or highway patrol, which sell reports online or by mail; crashes in town are usually handled by the city police or county sheriff, which have their own records office. You will need the date, the place and ideally the report number the officer gave you.
How long does it take to get an accident report?
Usually between a few days and several weeks. The officer has to finish and file the report first: New York says at least 14 days for electronically filed NYC police reports and 30 days for paper ones, and Arizona DPS says it receives trooper reports within 14 days.
How much does a police accident report cost?
Typically $5 to $25 in the states we checked: for example $5 in Illinois, $9 in Arizona and $22 online in New York ($7 search fee plus $15 per report), plus card fees on some portals. Washington DC gives the people involved a free copy.
Can anyone get a copy of a crash report?
In many states, no. Drivers, passengers, owners, their insurers and their lawyers can, while other people may get a version with personal details removed. Each state card below says who may ask, where the official page states it.
