Why police treat road rage shootings seriously

A confrontation that moves from road rage to gunfire in a residential street raises the risk for everyone nearby, even when no one is hurt. Police establish crime scenes to preserve evidence, including the vehicles, shell casings and CCTV or dashcam footage, and to identify everyone involved.

Road rage incidents can escalate quickly when drivers stop and confront each other. Police urge drivers who feel threatened to stay in their vehicle, drive to a police station or another safe, busy place, and call triple zero (000) rather than engaging with the other driver.

What happens next

Detectives will continue to investigate the shooting and the crash, including speaking to the occupants of both vehicles and any witnesses.
