What happened

The siblings were travelling together on one two-wheeler, with the elder brother riding and his sister riding pillion, on their way from Dehu Road to Nigdi. They had visited the Ghorawadeshwar area and were returning home when another two-wheeler rammed into their bike from behind near Poona Gate Hotel, according to Dehu Road police.

The brother died soon after being taken to hospital. His sister suffered grievous injuries and was declared brain dead on Tuesday. The siblings were first taken to YCM Hospital in Pimpri, then moved to another hospital in Bhosari, before being transferred to Jupiter Hospital in Pune, where the organ donation process began.

The other two-wheeler rider was also injured in the collision, underwent surgery and was receiving treatment. Police said he had been booked for rash driving and causing death by negligence. An FIR was registered by the uncle of the two siblings.

The organ donation that followed

After his daughter was declared brain dead, the father and mother consented to donate her organs. Her liver and one kidney were to be used for patients on the waiting list at Jupiter Hospital, while the other kidney was to go to a patient at Sahyadri Hospital in Hadapsar. The family, who were to return to their native place in Udupi, Karnataka, for the children's final rites, made a decision in grief that offered hope to several critically ill patients.

The case also drew attention to how often road crashes lead to organ donation. According to the Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC) in Pune, 60 organ donations had been recorded in its zone so far this year, including 27 donors declared brain dead, primarily following road traffic accidents in Pune district and surrounding areas. The ZTCC Pune Zone covers Pune, Satara, Sangli, Solapur and Kolhapur.
