What happened

The Cessna 208 Caravan departed Yei at 9:15 a.m. and lost communication with air traffic control at around 9:40 a.m. before crashing near Luri Mountain, about 20 kilometres southwest of Luri. All 14 people on board were killed.

An investigation committee established by former Minister of Transport Rizik Zacharia Hassan and chaired by engineer Sebur Nyuon Antipas Nyok Kucha examined the crash. Releasing its findings on Tuesday, the committee identified poor weather, low visibility and communication failures as contributing factors.

Compensation for the families

Speaking at the release of the investigation report, committee chair Kucha said the victims would be compensated "duly" by the insurer of the aircraft, and that the victims "will be fully compensated by the insurance company". The aircraft, registration 5Y-NOK, was insured in Kenya, placing responsibility for compensation with that insurer.

Kucha did not provide details about the amount of compensation, when payments would begin, or the identity of the insurer, and further information about the compensation process is still to come.

What the investigation recommended

The committee also recommended improvements to aviation safety oversight and flight operating procedures, so that lessons from the crash are reflected in how small aircraft operate in South Sudan.

If you fly on routes like this

  • Check the operator's safety record and whether the flight is covered by insurance before you travel
  • In poor weather, ask whether the flight will be delayed or cancelled — small aircraft are especially vulnerable to low visibility
  • Keep family members informed of your flight plans and expected arrival time
  • Know the local emergency number before you travel — our emergency numbers directory covers every country
