Motorcycles, speeding and the road toll

Four of the deadly crashes involved motorcycles, underlining the risks faced by riders over the long weekend.

The Transport Accident Commission said 220 lives had been lost on Victoria's roads so far this year, compared with 247 at the same time last year. Police warned drivers to reduce speed, noting that almost one in three fatalities this year had resulted from speeding.

Acting Road Policing Assistant Commissioner Peta Barrett said: "Every life lost on the roads is preventable and we are doing all we can to reduce road trauma." She pleaded with motorists to remain alert and cautious, especially on longer journeys and rural roads.

What happens next

Investigations were underway into all of the fatalities. Police called on anyone who witnessed any of the crashes, or who had CCTV footage, to contact Crime Stoppers.
