What happened

Around 3:25 p.m. on Saturday, Sedgwick County 911 received multiple calls that a vehicle had driven through a soccer game at Stryker Sports Complex. Wichita police, other local law enforcement, the Wichita Fire Department and Sedgwick County EMS all responded.

A witness told KWCH that a black pickup truck came ploughing through the youth soccer fields, hitting multiple people before stopping 100-200 yards down the fields. Dozens of emergency responders were on scene giving CPR and rendering aid to victims.

Wichita police later confirmed that a 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man, both from McPherson, died. Police said the two were not related, and their names had not been released.

Eleven other people were taken to hospital with traumatic injuries, including five children aged 5, 5, 8, 8 and 9, and adults aged 28, 32, 59, 65 and 68. A 61-year-old woman was also taken to hospital for medical, non-traumatic treatment.

The driver and the investigation

Wichita Police Capt. Aaron Moses said the driver of the truck is a 34-year-old woman from Garden City. She is in police custody. Two girls were in the vehicle with her at the time; police would not say what happened to the children or where they are now.

Moses said the woman had a child playing soccer at Stryker, but not on the field where the deadly crash occurred, and that she held a valid driver's licence. Police are working to determine how and why the crash occurred. Moses said he did not know how fast the truck was going or how it got onto the field, and that those details remain under investigation. Police said there is no additional ongoing threat from the driver, and Capt. Moses called the incident a "tragedy".

Police have asked anyone who may have video of the incident to submit it, saying: "Regardless of how significant you believe your footage may be, we encourage you to submit it. Even the smallest detail could assist investigators." Anyone with information is asked to call WPD Investigations at 316-268-4407, Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111, or 911. Drivers were asked to stay away from the area of 29th and Greenwich while the investigation continues.
