What happened

A Nissan Urvan bus, registration AC 144-17, was travelling from Takoradi towards Tarkwa when it collided with a trailer, registration GE 6440-23, which had been left partially on the carriageway in the same direction of travel. A man and a woman died instantly at the scene, according to the police account reported by the Ghana News Agency.

Ten other passengers were injured. Some were taken to Apinto Government Hospital and others to Tarkwa Municipal Hospital for treatment. The bodies of the two people who died were taken to the Apinto Government Hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.

Police warning on speed and broken-down vehicles

Assistant Commissioner of Police Joseph Apaloo, the Western Central Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) Commander, confirmed the incident to the Ghana News Agency. He appealed to drivers to manage their speed, noting that even when crashes occur, the severity of the impact is often tied to how fast a vehicle is moving.

He also urged motorists whose vehicles break down on busy highways to tow them off the road immediately, or to place warning triangles at a safe distance to alert oncoming traffic. He suggested that entrepreneurs able to acquire towing vehicles could consider offering towing services in the municipality for a fee, which could help clear stalled vehicles more quickly.

Why parked vehicles on highways are so dangerous

A stationary vehicle on a live carriageway leaves approaching drivers very little time to react, especially at night when a parked trailer may be poorly lit or poorly marked. Warning triangles, hazard lights and moving a broken-down vehicle fully off the road all give following drivers the warning they need. On busy commercial routes shared by buses, trailers and heavy vehicles, that warning can be the difference between a near miss and a fatal impact.
