What happened
A pile-up involving three vehicles happened on the Medan–Tebing Tinggi road at Simpang Tiga Pekan in Perbaungan on the morning of Wednesday 14 October 2026, at around 08:00, according to ANTARA.
The vehicles involved were a KUPM public minivan (angkot), a Fuso truck and a Hino Dutro truck. The angkot driver, Nixson Maju P. Sianturi, 46, died while receiving medical treatment at RS Melati Perbaungan hospital.
Nine other people were injured: the two truck drivers and seven passengers of the angkot. The injured were evacuated for medical treatment, police said.
According to the police account, the angkot was travelling from Tebing Tinggi towards Medan when it allegedly tried to overtake the vehicle ahead from the right, without enough room. The front-right of the angkot collided with the front-right of the Fuso truck coming from the opposite direction, from Medan towards Tebing Tinggi. Moments later, the Hino Dutro truck travelling behind the Fuso hit the back of that truck, producing the three-vehicle pile-up.
The front of the angkot was badly damaged. The Fuso truck suffered damage to its front-right, and the Hino Dutro truck was damaged at the front. Police from the Sergai traffic unit processed the scene and secured the vehicles as evidence.
If you drive on a busy intercity road like this
- Only overtake when you can see the road ahead is clear and there is enough room to complete the manoeuvre
- Never overtake into oncoming traffic — a head-on collision at highway speed is often fatal
- Keep a safe following distance so you can brake if the vehicle ahead stops
- Slow down at junctions and built-up stretches where traffic merges
- Know the local emergency number before you travel — our emergency numbers directory covers every country
